It’s located on the west of Belize and very close to the border with Guatemala. It’s known for its proximity of the Mayan ruins. The trip from Belize city is not long but Belize is very humid and hot, the buses are not air-conditioned, they are actually similar to the big school buses used in North America and were painted with other colors. Once there was enough air coming through the windows and as the bus drivers tend to speed we felt as if it has an air-condition. I just love these buses, you tend to see different experiences, one guy had a big boom box so he was playing music for the rest of the passengers and when he got off the bus, the driver put some nice loud music.
I arrived in San Ignacio around 5PM, I started looking for a guest house that Emil, the guy I met in Caye Caucker referred me to. I went their and met this kind lady, and when I mentioned that Emil sent me, she said yeah he’s my grand-son. Later on that day, her son John came to the house, and we had a very good conversation, and he turned to be Emil’s father. Really great family, the grandmother has this beautiful guest house that has this beautiful vibe. She started to tell me how her husband when he built the house, told her he want to build his dream house, and they decided to make it a guest house and called it J&R guest house, it’s the initial of her and her husband’s first names.
San Ignacio is very close to Mayan ruins, I visited a couple of them and it was very impressive to see how the old Mayan civilization was able to construct something as impressive as that and being able to preserve their culture although they were colonized and influenced by other civilizations.
