#134 Mexico City, vibrant, modern with rich culture
Every time I go out to discover Mexico City, I find it so big and overwhelming since I’ve spent the majority of my travel in a small city. It’s still a very interesting city, there’s always someone playing music or making some type of street performance. You always feel the city is alive with all the noise, the music and people who are waiting at the traditional restaurants, really amazing.
The city has many different neighborhoods and pretty much is broken along the socioeconomic of the people who live in that area, the historical center is where most tourist spend most of their time, it has very beautiful buildings dated back to the Spanish conquest and some as old as 500 years old.
The trendy neighborhood which’s along the paseo de la Reforma, you can find multinational companies, Starbucks cafes and some international hotels. There’s also a big Korean community who live here.
There’s also a neighborhood called Polanco, it used to be an industrial area but was bought and transformed by the richest man in Mexico. He built his companies and a museum named after his late wife and houses his huge art collection. Polanco now has many high end condos and apartment buildings, probably the only things that’s still reminder of its industrial past is the railway.
It’s kind of funny that the new and modern neighborhoods are nice, clean and has modern architecture but they lack the beautiful vibe and culture that you experience when you’re in the historical center.
One thing I noticed that Mexico is expensive compare to other places, as a traveler my main expenses are food, shelter and transportation. Food and shelter is about the same as other countries in Latin America but the transportation is 3 or 4 times more expensive.
The Latin culture is very clear and beautiful in Mexico, there’s music everywhere; in the train, in the streets, in the restaurants. Just like other Latin countries, people are easy to talk to, and they like to socialize, they also very positive and always smile and laugh. You can feel the warmth of the people, it might be uncomfortable for some, for instance in the train or in the bus, it might bother people in Canada or US is people bumped into them, or if people are playing music and talking loud in public places but here it’s very common and people don’t even pay attention to these little things.
