my students
I started teaching English back in February, it’s a nice experience working with young kids who were really fun and like to participate. I had many different activities, one time I had them prepare songs in English, most of the girls had chosen songs by Justin Bieber. I know that Justin Bieber is very popular but never thought that the young girls of 10 and 11 years old will go crazy for him. One student has Justin’s photos on her smart phone, and her headband. It’s not the first time I teach English, back in Taiwan I also taught English but I enjoyed this experience more because the kids like to laugh and as part of the Latino culture they like singing and dancing, so the class was very interactive.
In about a month I will be going back to Canada but I have some mixed feelings about that. I like how I am making living here, besides teaching English I cook and sell special meals for people who are recovering after surgery or have special diets, and a couple of times I cleaned a house for a sick couple who were recovering after surgery. Now that I live in an apartment I rent one of the rooms on weekly basis whenever is possible. So overall it’s enough to cover my rent and my food. I think I had a lot of a rough start when I was starting my life and when I went to university, that taught me a lot about life and I am not stressed out about the future because I know I can make a living. Traveling and seeing how other people live day to day I realize nothing more you need than food and shelter. I am not afraid and not ashamed to do any type of work.

I remember when my friend Raed was here and after spending 10 days traveling from one town to another we stopped at a big city, we went to the mall to eat. I remember we started to talk about how it felt eating at the food court where life around us looked as based on material things. Since I started my first trip in 2011 I feel I am becoming more and more content and happier than before. Back in 2012 when I went back to Canada, it was very hard to re-adjust to living in a regular or typical daily living in today’s society. I felt as the time goes by, that I started to be sucked into society’s ills and problems.
Every time I set on a journey, I come to learn more things about myself and my surroundings. I consider every new trip as a new phase in my life. Anyhow, I am going back but just like every time I have other plans for the future. I plan to continue traveling and continue my nomad life for the foreseeable future. After a short break, I hope to come back here to live in a place away from city’s living. I came to realize what makes me happy is the feeling of the ultimate freedom, not to be bind by society’s expectations and materialism.

Nice to hear from you again my friend. I’m glad you had a great time in latin america although you missed Chile, Argentina and Uruguay so you could see the differences among latinos. When you’re back in Canada we should meet and share thoughts about what you’ve lived lately. Take care 🙂

It’s a really good text Tarek. Some people will never realize what travelling can teach you. It’s not only learning or discovering different culture, but also to learn about yourself.
