#61 – Jordan – Dead Sea – The lowest point on earth
Jordan has a lot of history, and this place has seen many older civilizations. It’s believed that Moses climbed this mountain (Mount Nebo) when god gave him a view of the promised view. It was a very beautiful scene to see other mountains, the Dead Sea and the holy land. It’s also believed that Moses is buried somewhere near that area but his final resting place is still unknown.
There’s a church located on the same site, with a mosaic floor. Unfortunately, they were restoring the church so the mosaic floor was displayed on a temporary site. The church was constructed on the second half of the 4th century.
The weather was nice and there were few tourists at the site. The site is surrounded with empty mountains.
Going to the Dead Sea was an easy and short descent from Mt. Nebo. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth; it’s 377 meters below sea level. It’s called the Dead Sea because of the salinity of its water that prevents any aquatic life.
Unfortunately, the Dead Sea loses 1 meter of water every year. It has to do with the fact that many factories are set along the sea to extract minerals such as magnesium, potash and others. There are also many hotels and resorts along the banks of the sea. Since 1970 the Dead Sea lost almost 22meters of water.
